Built on a six-hectare remediated site of the former “Plant II” at Boxberg power plant location, the project features 400 MW grid-connection capacity and 1 600 MWh (1.6 GWh) storage capacity. Upon completion, the facility can theoretically supply electricity to approximately 640 000 households for four hours. It sets new industry benchmarks for grid stabilisation and efficient utilisation of variable renewable power, serving as a key building block of LEAG’s GigawattFactory.

HyperStrong is responsible for the end‑to‑end delivery of the battery energy‑storage system. The scope includes the supply of battery systems equipped with lithium‑iron‑phosphate cells, the integration of electrical equipment and the turnkey construction of the storage facility. The project will deploy HyperStrong’s field‑proven HyperBlock III liquid‑cooled utility‑scale energy storage system.

“We are honored to stand alongside LEAG today to break ground on the GigaBattery Boxberg 400 project. This 1.6 GWh facility embodies HyperStrong's unwavering dedication to Germany's energy transition”, Pingyang Wang, Senior Vice President of HyperStrong states. “By deploying our mature BESS solution and comprehensive EPC capabilities, we look forward to seeing this site become one of Europe's largest battery storage facilities, delivering reliable and flexible power to support Germany's renewable ambitions over the long term.”

The project further strengthens HyperStrong’s local presence in Germany and demonstrates its ability to deliver large-scale energy storage projects across Europe.

With critical supporting infrastructure being delivered by additional project partners, LEAG Clean Power emphasised the strategic value the project brings to Germany’s energy transition and regional development.

“The energy supply of the future requires high‑performance storage systems. With LEAG Clean Power, we are establishing another key component in Boxberg for the integration of renewable energies and the security of supply in Germany,” says Thomas Brandenburg, CEO of LEAG Clean Power GmbH. “The GigaBattery Boxberg 400 marks another milestone in the development of our GigawattFactory. It will help make wind and solar power flexibly usable and strengthen the stability of the electricity grid. At the same time, the project makes a crucial contribution to the transformation of the Lusatia energy region. Together with HyperStrong and other partners, we are launching a pioneering infrastructure project here that provides concrete support for the energy transition.”
